DDA HANDRAILS
Mechcon Welding and Fabrication have been collaboratively designing commercial handrails for the city of Melbourne and throughout for nearly 20 years.
We work with industrial designers and architects, achieving compliant DDA handrails and balustrades that create architecturally appealing landscapes and building infrastructure, then delivering a classy and modern finish on all types of commercial projects.
Our design knowledge is second to none in Victoria as we are one of only a few companies in Australia that specifically specialise in the design, manufacture, and installation of commercial DDA architectural handrails.
The company comprises both staff and highly skilled tradesmen who have very specific skills working with all types of materials such as stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminium.
The business we operate is based on solid engineering practices and thorough structural systems that have been meticulously tested and applied on commercial projects for nearly two decades.
From a small government primary school metalwork work package to a modern railway station project, our business model is always to provide the same quality and value for all customers by providing competitive pricing based on our 20 years of efficient handrail manufacturing practices to achieve these goals.
Mechon has helped design many different architectural handrail systems on modern projects, whether the technical input was for engineering and fixing methods, protective coatings and finishes, or options to upgrade existing handrails to achieve both DDA compliance and keep a modern look for the building.
Our business carefully follows and employs systems that come directly from Australian Standards, such as AS1554/NZS:2004 including GP general-purpose welding or SP special-purpose welding of Handrails for all types of environments or specific industries that may require AS1657-2028 in industrial locations or, more commonly, public spaces and buildings for AS1428.1-2021 Design for access and mobility was most of our work; we revolved around this architectural requirement.
Mechcon has always had strong engineering knowledge, which evolved with working with heavy industry and manufacturing quality industrial equipment for bulk materials handling and conveyor systems.
Having a thorough engineering mechanical background has provided many opportunities and experiences to create better ways to anchor, mount, fix, and connect handrails to varying substrates and structures more securely.
We look forward to continuing to help shape our architectural and modern city with all its first-class infrastructure and open spaces now and in the years to come.
What we are known for (10 ) key points:
At Mechcon, we design and fabricate DDA ramp handrails that meet the strict requirements of AS 1428.1:2021, ensuring full compliance with national accessibility standards. Whether it’s for a new build or a council-mandated upgrade, our DDA compliant ramp solutions feature circular or elliptical cross-sections between 30–50mm, are installed at a consistent height of 865–1000mm, and maintain a minimum 1000mm clearance between dual handrails. Each DDA path handrail is constructed to provide a smooth, continuous gripping surface, with 180-degree returns or curved terminations for safe and accessible transitions. Horizontal extensions at both the top and bottom of the ramp are also included to enhance safety and functionality.
As with our architectural ramp handrail design solutions, our DDA path handrails are engineered with both compliance and long-term performance in mind. We often work with owner-builders and commercial builders, navigating local council DDA checks and providing tailored solutions when standard options fall short. Our DDA ramps can include additional features such as kerb rails, tactile ground surface indicators, and slip-resistant finishes, ensuring safe, inclusive access for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility. Backed by decades of engineering expertise, Mechcon delivers DDA compliant handrails that integrate seamlessly with modern infrastructure across Melbourne and beyond.
