Mechcons show casing 17 years of designing, fabricating and installing Fire Stair Handrails, and in this video we are looking a typical set of stairs we have brought up to standard and had this part of the build ready for handover. This was inclusive of a full metal works package including architectural Balustrades and Screens.

G’day guys, it’s Luke from Mechcon Welding and Fabrication. We’re going to have a look at another handrail aspect that we specialise in, which is fire stair handrails. We’re out here today, this particular job’s at Wheelers Hill.
It’s a childcare centre with two separate stairwells, two separate fire stairs, and we’ll just have a quick look over the handrail system that we’ve done on this particular job. We’ve been providing builders across Melbourne with fire stair handrails for nearly 17 years and we’ve become quite efficient at designing, manufacturing and installing these systems without any fuss.
This particular one that we’re looking at today has an extra rail that the architects nominated. Being a childcare centre, the gaps on these handrails need to be smaller rather than larger, just in case in an event that they had a smaller child, I guess, in these stairwells.
But generally it’s only two rails that run intermediate from the top with about a 460mm gap. So this particular system here has got an extra rail which just lessens the gaps. Other than that, it’s a standard handrail, standard fire stair handrail following the code.
And we’ll just have a look at the transitions. These transitions are often sight weld and standard on site. The panels themselves are all prefabricated. So in terms of all up work, there would be 90% of it done in the workshop and just the joins and the transitions done on site.
A little bit of welding and sanding. But we’ve become very familiar with doing these types of handrails, following the strict codes and the standards. And we’ve been recognised across Melbourne for these types of handrail systems.
I look forward to doing a lot more of them too.
