Mechcon Welding & Fabrication was appointed to deliver the full design, fabrication, and installation of new DDA stainless steel handrails as part of major accessibility upgrades at Glen Eira Town Hall. The project required strict compliance with AS1428 Design for Access and Mobility, ensuring both main entrances met current Australian accessibility standards.
The works began in early March 2026, following Mechcon’s selection as the preferred contractor due to our extensive experience in commercial handrail installation, government infrastructure projects, and architectural stainless‑steel fabrication. With more than twenty years working across public buildings and council facilities, Mechcon has established a reputation for delivering high‑quality, compliant, and long‑lasting access solutions.
Scope of Works – The project involved the removal of ageing, non‑compliant handrails and the installation of new AS1428‑compliant stainless steel handrail systems across two major entry points. On the eastern side of the building, Mechcon installed handrails to an eight‑metre wheelchair ramp and an adjoining staircase. The western side required a twelve‑metre access ramp and a second staircase, each fitted with continuous, fully compliant handrails designed for safe and inclusive public access.
All handrail assemblies were fabricated using high‑grade stainless steel to ensure corrosion resistance, structural integrity, and a premium architectural finish. Each system was designed to provide continuous gripping surfaces, compliant height tolerances, and correct terminations, meeting every requirement of AS1428.
Design, Fabrication & Installation – Mechcon managed the complete process, including site measurements, CAD modelling, fabrication drawings, and installation sequencing. Our team ensured seamless integration with the existing architecture while improving accessibility and safety for all visitors. Installation was carried out by qualified personnel following strict quality and safety procedures, with final compliance checks completed on site.
Built for Durability and Modern Public Use – DDA stainless steel handrails are essential for modern public buildings that require reliable, maintenance‑free access systems. Mechcon’s handrails are engineered for long‑term performance and backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty, providing Glen Eira City Council with confidence in the durability and quality of the upgrade.
This project demonstrates Mechcon’s capability in delivering DDA handrails in Melbourne, AS1428 stainless steel handrails, and high‑precision commercial handrail installations for government and public infrastructure.

G’day guys, it’s Luke from Mechcon Welding and Fabrication.
In early March 2026, Mechcon Welding and Fabrication were the successful contractor to carry out the design, fabrication, and installation of DDA stainless steel handrails following strict Australian standards, AS1428.
The scope of works was to remove older existing handrails to install and upgrade modern stainless steel compliant handrails to two separate entries to the building at Glen Eira Town Hall.
This included one eight-meter wheelchair ramp and one set of stairs on the east side, and another ramp twelve meters long and also a set of stairs on the west side.
Mechcon was chosen for these works based off twenty years’ experience dealing with government buildings and infrastructure, specialising in DDA access handrails and architectural finishes.
These types of handrails are important for modern buildings that require a first-class finish and a long-lasting, maintenance-free system that is backed with a lifetime warranty on workmanship.
