Powering Melbourne’s expanding communities requires expertly designed infrastructure fabrication that meets strict engineering and compliance standards. That’s exactly what Mechcon delivered for the Beveridge–Wallan electrical upgrade, a government asset fabrication project requiring high-performance kiosk substation platforms built under a tight deadline. With zero room for on-site modifications, our fabrication team ensured every component—from PFC channels to mild steel grating and laser-cut plates—was built to precise specifications. Using hot-dip galvanisation for corrosion resistance and AS/NZS 1554SP-compliant welding methods, we delivered a fabrication solution built for long-term durability. By early March 2025, over 17 tonnes of structural steel components were successfully installed across multiple substation sites. This project is a perfect example of how Mechcon combines precision engineering, advanced fabrication techniques, and expert project execution to meet complex industrial demands. In the next sections, we’ll break down the challenges, fabrication methods, and key takeaways from this project.

Every Kiosk Substation Starts with a Solid Platform

A kiosk substation is only as strong as the steel platform it stands on. At Mechcon, we specialise in fabricating durable, load-bearing steel structures that provide the stability, strength, and compliance needed for safe, long-term operation. Our precision-fabricated platforms ensure that every component fits flawlessly, eliminating installation issues and supporting critical power infrastructure without compromise.

Why Substation Kiosk Platforms Require Precision Fabrication

The kiosk substation platform acts as the structural foundation, supporting the weight of transformers and electrical components. To prevent misalignment, every piece of steel must be fabricated with exacting precision. That’s why expert steel fabrication for substation kiosks is essential—ensuring platforms are structurally sound, compliant, and corrosion-resistant. Mechcon’s expertise in substation kiosk fabrication meant we could fabricate high-strength steel platforms that required no modifications during installation. With this level of precision, we delivered reliable steel solutions built to last. Up next, we’ll look at the fabrication methods we used to complete this project.

High-Precision Kiosk Substation Fabrication for the Beveridge–Wallan Project

When Ausnet, Jemena, and Zinfra required kiosk substation platforms for the Beveridge–Wallan upgrade, they weren’t just looking for a fabricator—they needed a trusted engineering partner. The platforms had to be custom-built to support high electrical loads, meet strict compliance standards, and be delivered on schedule. With Mechcon’s expertise in high-precision infrastructure fabrication, they had confidence in a seamless, problem-free installation.

Overcoming Fabrication Challenges for Kiosk Substation Platforms

Some projects push the limits of what’s possible, and this was one of them. With tight deadlines, strict fabrication requirements, and no room for errors, Mechcon had to deliver flawlessly and fast.

The first challenge? Speed. With zero prep time, we had to complete 55+ pages of shop drawings in two weeks and jump straight into fabrication. There was no room for delays—every component had to be approved and ready for production immediately.

Next came precision. Unlike other projects where on-site adjustments can be made, this one required every kiosk substation platform to be prefabricated to exact dimensions. If anything was even slightly off, installation would have been impossible.

And then there was scale. With 17 tonnes of steel components to process, transport, and install across multiple substation sites, keeping everything on schedule and fully compliant with AS/NZS 1554 SP standards required expert coordination.

Despite these challenges, we got it done—on time, on spec, and without a single setback.

Choosing the Right Materials for Durability and Safety

Large-scale infrastructure fabrication projects demand precision and speed, and this electrical substation upgrade was no exception. Ausnet, Zinfra, and Jemena required a trusted substation kiosk builder to meet tight deadlines with zero margin for error. Mechcon stepped up, delivering high-performance steel platforms under intense time constraints.

14 January 2025 – Project Awarded
Mechcon was awarded the design and fabrication contract for four substation kiosk platforms with no lead time for preparation. Immediate action was required.

14 – 28 January 2025 – Shop Drawings Completed
In just two weeks, our team produced 55+ pages of detailed shop drawings for approval, ensuring millimetre precision for fabrication.

February 2025 – Full-Scale Fabrication Begins
With the first platform design approved, fabrication started immediately. While steel components were processed, we developed three additional sets of shop drawings for the remaining platforms.

Early March 2025 – 17 Tonnes of Steel Installed
By early March, Mechcon had fabricated and installed 17 tonnes of steel platforms, gratings, and handrails across four substation sites—all delivered flawlessly and on time.

Strict Compliance & Quality Assurance in Kiosk Transformer Fabrication

When it comes to substation fabrication, precision isn’t an option—it’s a necessity. That’s why Mechcon follows strict AS/NZS 1554SP welding and fabrication standards, ensuring that every platform meets the highest levels of structural integrity and durability.

Our quality control process included material verification, weld strength testing, and pre-installation inspections, guaranteeing that every component was 100% compliant before delivery. With full material traceability and comprehensive testing, we provided documented assurance that the platforms would perform exactly as intended.

Because of this rigorous approach, installation was seamless, efficient, and problem-free. When you partner with Mechcon, you get precision-engineered and custom steel fabrication that meets industry demands without compromise.

FAQ

Yes, we specialise in custom-fabricated substation kiosk platforms designed to fit the unique requirements of each project. Whether the site has uneven terrain, limited space, or environmental exposure concerns, we can adjust the size, layout, and structural design to ensure a perfect fit. Our platforms are built to support heavy loads while meeting safety and compliance standards, so no matter the site conditions, we ensure a secure, long-lasting installation.

Yes, customisations are welcome!

At Mechcon, we understand that project requirements can evolve, and we’re equipped to adapt quickly without compromising quality. Our team can adjust designs, rework components, and refine fabrication processes to meet last-minute changes. Whether it’s a modification in platform dimensions, material specifications, or compliance requirements, we work closely with our clients to ensure seamless adjustments while keeping the project on track.

Galvanised steel is one of the most durable materials for outdoor infrastructure, and our substation kiosk platforms are built to withstand extreme temperatures, moisture, and corrosion. The hot-dip galvanisation process coats the steel with a protective zinc layer, shielding it from rust, salt exposure, and environmental wear. Whether installed in coastal areas, high-rainfall zones, or extreme heat, our platforms remain structurally sound and maintenance-free for years.
